There has been a lot of media speculation about growing obesity problems in Britain, particularly in children. Great Britain Cycle Coaching believe that we can help reverse this as cycling is not just a sport in its own right but helps build endurance, discipline and fitness for most other sports as well as being a life skill that follows from childhood into adult life.
We have been amazed at the number of children who have taken to cycling and participated in our clubs on a regular basis. Many of these children had not previously shown an interest in other “traditional” sports. However, cycling, like swimming, is becoming extremely rare on school timetables mainly because of a lack of available facilities or qualified coaches.
We passionately believe cycle coaching should be provided to every child but particularly hard to reach, disadvantaged and disabled children / young people and adults. So at the start of 2015 we set up free cycling clubs in 4 local schools (2 primary, 1 secondary and 1 special provision). We wanted to see if we could develop and sustain sufficient interest in cycling to ensure all 4 schools entered teams into the Inter Schools Cycling championships – an event none had taken part in before.
We have been amazed and delighted by what the children at our schools achieved. Despite never entering the competition before, our schools placed, 1st, 2nd, and 4th in the Primary competition and 2nd in the Secondary. Our riders were also the Champion Boy and Champion Girl in both competitions.
